Frequently asked questions
Common questions
How does Strike Gate work?
It reads PDF and DOCX files on your device, extracts their text, and matches known security-marking patterns. It flags findings for review; it does not make classification decisions.
What markings does Strike Gate detect?
Classification banners such as SECRET and TOP SECRET//SCI//NOFORN; portion marks; classification authority blocks; CUI banners, categories, and limited dissemination controls (LDCs); and legacy FOUO/SBU markings.
Does Strike Gate upload anything?
The web scanner does not send documents, extracted text, or findings to the Strike Gate scanning API. Its free-demo counter uses a random cookie and count requests. After a successful free scan, the site sends only a scan category and random event ID for an owner SMS alert; a likely-human visit alert includes only the page path. The extension keeps temporary scan summaries in browser session storage, and Outlook may retain pending findings locally for review. See the local-scanning page for each method's network details.
Can I run Strike Gate offline?
The web scanner can scan offline once its page assets are loaded; a fresh page load needs the hosted assets. The built CLI runs offline after setup. The hosted Office add-in needs a network connection to load its task pane.
What do confidence scores mean?
They indicate how strongly a detected pattern matches known marking formats. They are not a judgment that information is classified. Every finding requires human review.
What does each result status mean?
No Markings Detected (clean): no marking met the reporting threshold; this is not proof the document is safe. Explicitly Marked Unclassified: an UNCLASSIFIED banner was found with no higher markings. Contains Classification Language: a weak authority-block or legacy-term match without a banner. Suspected Controlled: a banner and another structured marking were found, but not clearly as CUI or classified. Controlled (CUI): a CUI banner and supporting structured marking were found. Classified Markings Detected: a classified banner and supporting structured marking were found. Classified — High Confidence: a classified banner and corroborating classified portion mark were found.
Does it work with Word and Outlook?
Yes. The Word add-in scans the open document. The Outlook add-in checks the message draft and supported attachments before sending.
Can it block uploads to AI tools?
With a valid license and remaining credits, the extension can intercept supported PDF, DOCX, and TXT uploads and eligible text pastes on websites, including ChatGPT and Claude. Flagged content is blocked by default, with an explicit override option. It is a client-side safeguard, not a non-bypassable DLP boundary; unsupported or failed scans may not be blocked.
How are scan credits handled?
A signed .lic file authorizes your scans; no account or login is required. You can load the same license in all five tools, but each tool stores its paid-credit count locally, so balances do not automatically sync between separate tools or devices.
Is there a free option?
Yes. The web app includes three free demo scans, with no account required.
Can I use Strike Gate in a disconnected environment?
Yes. The CLI runs without network access and can produce JSON or HTML reports. The web app can also scan offline once its bundled files are available locally.
Does Strike Gate make classification decisions?
No. It matches marking patterns only. An authorized person must review every finding and make any handling or classification decision.
Can I use it on a government network?
Follow your organization’s software approval process. Contact us for the documentation your ISSM will ask for.
What if I lose my license file?
We don’t keep a copy, so lost credits can’t be restored. Back the file up when you buy.
